PIERRE (SD) – Four South Dakota students who are aiming for a future in retail business are getting
an assist with their education.
The South Dakota Retailers Association has awarded $18,500 among the four scholarship recipients.
Those awarded scholarships are:
- Rebecca Dorn, Dell Rapids
Dorn received a $6,000 scholarship to attend vet school. Dorn intends to join her family veterinary
clinic in Dell Rapids. - Colter Hanson, Sisseton
Hanson received a $5,000 scholarship to complete his education at SDSU. Hanson will be returning
to Sisseton to take over his family business. - Tucker Hardy, Langford
Hardy received a $4,000 scholarship to complete his education at Lake Area Tech. Hardy plans to
take over the family business in Langford. - Jayla Murphy, Sioux Falls
Murphy received a $3,500 scholarship to attend SDSU. Murphy intends to open a boutique in the
Black Hills.
“Growing up in a family business, I know how important it is to start planning and preparing for the next
generation to step in,” said Scholarship Committee Chair, Sarah Hustead. “This year, we’re awarding a
record $18,500 in scholarships, and three of our four recipients are already on the path to taking over
their own family businesses. That’s exactly the kind of momentum and forward thinking we want to
encourage across South Dakota.”
“We are committed to helping businesses, small and large, remain sustainable, influential, and
profitable,” said Nathan Sanderson, Retailers Executive Director. “Scholarships are just one way we
help perpetuate businesses in South Dakota and help prepare young people for success in the
industry.”
The Retailers Association scholarship program provides financial help to students studying for a career
in hospitality, business, or trades. Since the program was launched in 1992, the Association has awarded
289 scholarships, totaling more than $288,575.
